Children's Liturgy of the Word

Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Matthew 19:13-15

This program is to fulfill the needs for our children preschool (3, 4 and 5 years old) through kindergarten to have an understanding of the church and the love of God in their lives. One way of making the mass more interesting for our young parishioners is a Liturgy of the Word service especially for them.

At each Eucharistic Liturgy from October through the middle of May, Holy Spirit Parish makes such a service available to the young children. Each service reflects the adult service being held in the worship space. In addition to prayer, scripture acclamation, etc., we attempt to capture the attention of the children and make the scriptures more meaningful by using drama, music, stories and hands-on activities. Father will call the children up after opening prayer to the altar for a blessing.

Upon entering the worship space children are seated with their parents and are called to their own service by the presiding priest. The children's Liturgy of the Word is conducted in the preschool classrooms. The children are provided name tags at the beginning of the year and parents are asked to pick up their child's name tag before the program begins.

Liturgists receive training, prepared plans for each session and a prepared environment in which to hold the service. The liturgists are scheduled to teach one Sunday a month at a mass of their preference. We are excited about this program and all it has to offer our little people.
