Small Christian Communities By Kathy Early A Small Christian Community is a small group of Christians (approximately 8 to 15 members) who come together on a regular, continuing basis to pray, to share their faith stories, to support one another, to deepen their understanding of Catholic traditions and to reach out in service to the larger community. Several years ago, as Holy Spirit Parish was undergoing a two year process of parish-wide renewal called RENEW, parish leaders charted a new course, a new vision, for the future: to become a community of communities. In the spirit of this vision, a new parish structure was established in 1990 to support the development and nurturing of permanent small communities in Holy Spirit Parish. Small Christian communities have their roots in the house churches of the early centuries of Christian life. The phenomenon of Small Christian Communities in the American Catholic Church today is an outgrowth of similar movements which have been very powerful forces for Christianity in Latin America, Africa and Asia for the past three decades. Holy Spirit small communities meet regularly to break open God's word, to share faith stories and to challenge members to live out the gospel in family life, in neighborhoods and in the work places. It's easy to join a small community! Small communities meet almost every day of the week, in homes throughout the parish. Information is available after all Sunday liturgies in the Commons or any small community pastor. We hope that you will join us and become a part of this exciting and rewarding way to get to know and love your Holy Spirit brothers and sisters.
