SACRAMENTAL LIFE

The Sacraments of the Church

“The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life; they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith.”

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH · CCC 1210

Join us at Holy Spirit Parish to receive your sacraments and deepen your faith. We warmly invite you to be part of our community as we celebrate these sacred moments together. Your journey is important to us, and we look forward to welcoming you.

SACRAMENT OF INITIATION

Born into the Life of Christ

Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation incorporate us into the Body of Christ and establish our identity as Catholic Christians.

SACRAMENT I

Baptism

The foundation of the Christian life — the doorway through which we enter the Church.

Baptism cleanses us from original sin and gives us our identity as Christians, members of His body, the Church. The Church teaches that infant baptism should be done as soon as possible after birth.

Ideally, families will be in touch with the parish around the sixth month of pregnancy in order to complete formation in preparation for this sacrament.

SACRAMENT II

The Holy Eucharist

The source and summit of the Christian life — the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Under the appearances of bread and wine, Jesus is made present to us in this sacrifice of love that we enter into at Mass.

First Holy Communion typically takes place in 2nd grade through Youth Discipleship, following formation for First Reconciliation. Parents and youth attend formation and retreats. Masses celebrating First Communions take place during the Easter season.

Eucharistic Adoration takes place every first Thursday of each month, with Exposition at 12:00 PM and Benediction at 6:00 PM — a time of silent prayer in the loving presence of the Lord.

Confirmation

The grace received at Baptism is strengthened and we are sent more deeply into the Church’s life and mission.

Adults who wish to be Confirmed may contact Deacon Bob Smithberger to learn about formation through the OCIA process.

Confirmation for youth in the Diocese of Richmond typically takes place in 10th grade and involves a year of formation and preparation. Parents should contact the parish office.

SACRAMENT OF HEALING

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

The healing mercy of Jesus — restoring us to life in Christ in body, mind, and spirit.

Throughout the Gospels Jesus healed the sick, not only physically but through the forgiveness of sins. The Anointing of the Sick continues this healing ministry.

Anointings can be scheduled before surgery, in the midst of chronic illness, or in emergency situations. They can take place in hospitals, nursing homes, or at home.

SACRAMENTS OF SERVICE & VOCATION

Called to Love & Serve

Matrimony and Holy Orders orient the faithful toward the salvation of others and the building up of the Church.

Matrimony

Man and woman become “one flesh,” revealing the love Christ has for His bride, the Church.

Marriage is a sacrament in which one man and one woman enter into a life-long union with openness to the gift of life, as St. Paul reminds us in Ephesians.

Parishioners who are engaged should contact Father Anthony to arrange an initial appointment. Please note: a wedding date and related preparations must not be confirmed before this initial meeting.

Holy Orders

Jesus instituted Holy Orders to continue His ministry in the Church through deacons, priests, and bishops.

Holy Orders refers to the sacrament by which men are ordained as deacons, priests, and bishops, participating in the ministry of Jesus for the good of His people.

Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood in our diocese. Men interested in discerning a call to priesthood are encouraged to reach out.
