VIRTUS is also for parents who would like to learn more aware of the potential dangers not just in a community setting but also in the virtual community of social media and online gaming.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14
We want to welcome all preschoolers through first graders to the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program. What a blessing this is for our young parishioners to grow in faith and understanding of the life of Jesus and what a privilege this is for our teachers to help plant faith’s seeds into their hearts. Our dedicated volunteers teach the Gospel reading through stories, songs and hands-on activities. We offer Children’s Liturgy at each Mass throughout most of the school year from September to June.
The children are to sit with their families at the beginning of Mass. After the opening prayer and the “Gloria”, the priest will call the children to come to the altar to receive a special blessing. Then the teachers and assistants will escort the children to the preschool rooms where they will spend about 20 minutes sharing God’s Word.
Our teachers have experienced much joy in sharing the Good News of Jesus with the children. Prayerfully consider helping in this program as a teacher or assistant. Your commitment would involve one class during one Mass every four weeks. As a volunteer, you are provided the lesson plan, all supplies and a prepared environment. We welcome new volunteers throughout the program year.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FORMATION – Grades 6-8
Mondays: 7-8:30 pm for Christian Formation and Spirit Nights
Parents are recognized as having the primary responsibility for training their children in practicing their faith. At Holy Spirit, we are delighted to partner with you and your child on this faith journey! Our middle schoolers are taught by experienced, caring individuals who want our pre-teens and teens to get to know and grow their relationship with Jesus Christ. Our Christian Formation program uses the St. Mary's Press Catholic Connections for Middle Schoolers curriculum which aims to encourage our young people to live out the Gospel truths and the Church's mission.
Spirit Nights are a way for our middle schoolers to interact with one another in large and small group activities led by our high school leaders, the Young Apostles. Together they play games, share in testimonies, fellowship and small-group discussions. Adult leaders serve as mentors and "snack-providers".
We encourage being part of the greater church family by caring for others and so we offer opportunities to serve in various ways
- in liturgy as altar servers, lectors or cantors
- in outreach projects as packers of the Beach Bags program, packers of holiday food baskets, or crafters of gifts
- in sharing their faith as assistants for Children's Liturgy of the Word or as actors or emerging leaders for Vacation Bible School.
LIFE TEEN - Gr. 9-12
Sundays: 6 – 8 PM
Life Teen is a comprehensive Catholic faith formation program used all over the world to bring high schoolers closer to Christ. Holy Spirit's Core Team Leaders are adult leaders who gather together once a month to plan each of the sessions of a series of Life Teen topics. They have become a family dedicated to sharing the beauty of the Catholic faith and its traditions. We are also blessed in having teen leaders called Young Apostles who gather, plan and carry out our Life Teen Socials once a month.
Our interactive and engaging format encourages teens to ask questions, seek answers, and live out their Catholic identity in their day to day lives. Through small and large group activities, teens are given a safe and nurturing environment to build healthy and lasting relationships. They find a sense of community and belonging in our Church. Our Core Team Leaders have had the privilege of sharing in the sacraments with our teens through Life Teen Nights of Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation and Holy Mass.
This past year we've participated in Catholic Youth Day at Busch Gardens, the Diocesan Youth Conference in Richmond and the Steubenville Conference in Atlanta as well as a teen and core team led retreat in Hanover, Virginia.
Currently we are preparing for our fall weekend retreat called "Spoken" at the KOA Campgrounds in Virginia Beach from Friday to Sunday, November 8 to 10.
If you have any questions or concerns or would like to volunteer in any of our Middle School Christian Formation or High School Life Teen Programs, please contact Katrina Cruz at 757-468-3600 ext. 108 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

SUNDAY MORNING SCRIPTURE STUDY
On Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:00 am (between the 8:00 and 10:15 Masses) there is a Scripture Study for adults. All parishioners, especially parents of children in Christian formation classes, are invited to attend.
TUESDAY EVENING ADULT FORMATION CLASS
Sessions begin at 7:00 pm. All parishioners are invited to attend and participate in this class.
All adult Catholics should be confirmed in their faith. In the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.
The Church teaches that: “the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. … By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.”
RITE OF CHRISTIAN FORMATION for ADULTS (RCIA)
Holy Spirit Parish warmly welcomes new members and provides appropriate spiritual formation according to each person’s need. This call to teach others by our words and actions is one that the Lord offers us because of our baptism and our personal commitment to respond to the invitation to serve God by serving each other. Most of us learn of this call to ministry and commitment from our family who shared their faith with us and began to teach us of God’s love and care from the time we were infants.
The Order of Christian Initiation is the formation process the Church uses to help members of the community come to share in the full sacramental life of the Church. It is an ongoing process within the life of the parish community designed to welcome new members and, at the same time, to lead every Catholic to deeper belief and renewal of his or her faith. It is guided by the needs of those who seek membership and is specifically designed for :
Unbaptized adults requesting membership in the Catholic Church
Persons baptized in other Christian Churches who wish to join the Catholic Church
Baptized Catholics who have not completed the Sacraments of Initiation
For adults who have not been baptized in the Christian faith and who seek admission into the Catholic Faith. The Catechumenate is typically a year-long process, culminating in receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
Reception into the Faith
For adults who have been baptized in another Christian denomination or as Catholics without any formal Christian formation. Reception into the faith requires a profession of faith and the reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. The reception into the faith may take place at any time during the year but is normally received during the Easter season.
SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES
Small Christian Communities meet on a weekly or biweekly basis to discuss Scripture and reflect on the Word of God in their lives. For more information, contact Kathy Early at (757) 468-3600
The parish participates in number of charitable and social justice programs. Just Faith is a formation program focused on the social teachings of the Catholic Church.
Cursillo is a lay movement of the Catholic Church. The name Cursillo is Spanish, meaning short course, and is associated with a 3-day weekend which is only one aspect of the Cursillo movement. Small community is stressed as a method of faith formation, holiness and spiritual support.
