Faith Formation K-12

Holy Spirit K-12 Faith Formation Program 2022-23

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your family’s faith journey. Keep in mind that regardless of how you sign up your family for formation classes this year, you as parents, have the “Domestic Church” right in your home, a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity. The “Domestic Church” provides a place where your child’s/teen’s faith takes root and is nurtured through your words and examples as parents. (No. 1666 – Catechism of the Catholic Church). You are your child’s WITNESS to the faith.

In keeping with our parish’s observance of the Year of the Eucharist from July 25, 2021 to November 1, 2022, our theme for the coming school year is “Christ in Me.” Remembering Christ in all of us, as catechists, we hope to inspire our children and teens to deepen their prayer life before the Blessed Sacrament. We’ll share ways to build community through Christian fellowship and service.

The format of our Elementary Christian Formation, Middle School Edge and High School Life Teen will be in person. If you need guidance for a homeschool option, please reach out to our Christian Formation office.

If you or your child/teen answered yes to any of the questions stated above, please do not attend the session.

CLOW Ministry

Do you like sharing the love of Jesus Christ with little ones? Are you available once a month to teach our young parishioners during the 10 AM Mass? Or would you like to help pass out coloring sheets, crayons or art supplies?

If you are interested, please contact Katrina Cruz at or (757) 468-3600 ext. 108.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

We want to welcome children in Pre-K through first grade to the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program. What a blessing this is for our young parishioners to grow in faith and understanding of the life of Jesus and what an opportunity this is for our teachers to help plant faith’s seeds into their hearts. Each week, our dedicated volunteers teach the Gospel reading through stories, songs and hands-on activities.

We offer CLOW at the Sunday 10 AM Mass. Children are to sit with their families at the beginning of Mass. After the opening prayer and the “Gloria”, Fr. Matt or the deacon will call the children to come to the front to receive a special blessing. The teachers and assistants will then escort the children to Activity A where they will spend about 20 minutes sharing God’s Word.

Our teachers have experienced much joy in sharing the Good News of Jesus with the children. Prayerfully consider helping in this program as a teacher or assistant. Your commitment would involve one class during one Mass every four weeks. As a volunteer, you are provided the lesson plan, all supplies and a prepared environment. We welcome new volunteers throughout the program year. All adult volunteers will need to be VIRTUS-trained.

Parents are encouraged to come and see what the children are learning. If a child experiences separation anxiety, parents are welcome to accompany them until they become more accustomed to going on their own.

The health and safety of our children is so important, therefore we will follow all diocesan guidelines.  Out of love and care for those who have not been vaccinated, we ask that everyone, whether vaccinated or not, who want to help with children’s liturgy to please wear a mask.

If you are interested in joining the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program as a liturgist, please complete the google form through the volunteer link. Please contact Katrina Cruz through the parish office at 757-468-3600 ext. 108 or email if you have any questions.

K-5 Faith Formation Ministry

We're excited to continue using Loyola Press' curriculum of "Finding God - 2021 Edition." The new format is described by Loyola Press as:

The perfect place to start a life of intentional discipleship, Finding God: Our Response to God’s Gifts® is rooted in Scripture, Catholic doctrine, and Ignatian spirituality. Built for today’s learner, children are offered a new model of catechesis that embraces technology, responds to the ongoing invitation to enter into a deeper relationship with God, and encourages them to find God in all things.

Edge Ministry & Spirit Nights
Mondays 7:00-8:30 pm

Parents are recognized as having the primary responsibility for raising their children in the faith. At Holy Spirit, we are delighted to partner with you and your child on this faith journey. This past year was quite the journey to maneuver through the pandemic and transition to the new format of Middle School Edge, but God was generous in his provisions! Edge is a Catholic middle school youth ministry curriculum created for pre-teens in grades six, seven, and eight and is designed to meet them where they are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and socially. Edge are creative nights that bring our Catholic faith to life and break open relevant issues for middle school youth. The catechesis is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Through a weekly hybrid format of zoom and in-person, our core team family managed to share our faith with our middle schoolers. Our core team is excited to offer an in-person Middle School Edge this coming school year on Monday nights from 7 to 8:30 PM. It will be wonderful to greet and personally meet each of our pre-teens and teens face to face.

Spirit Nights were our gatherings this past school year which included Christmas-themed and Easter-themed socials, a paint night and a wood-working workshop. Our middle schoolers also participated in packing Thanksgiving baskets, creating edible ornaments for our Christmas Angel Tree families and helping with food drive collections, parish clean-up day and St. Vincent dePaul outreach to Spirit House.

Looking ahead, our middle schoolers can participate with the Young Vincentians, volunteer opportunities for VBS, Catholic Youth Day at Busch Gardens and the regional youth event with Sean Forrest in the fall.

Life Teen Ministry

Sundays 6-8:00 pm

Life Teen is a comprehensive Catholic faith formation program used all over the world to bring high schoolers closer to Christ.

Holy Spirit's Core Team Leaders are adult leaders who gather together once a month to plan each of the sessions of a series of Life Teen topics. They have become a family dedicated to sharing the beauty of the Catholic faith and its traditions. We are also blessed in having teen leaders called Young Apostles who gather, plan and carry out our Life Teen Socials once a month.

Our interactive and engaging format encourages teens to ask questions, seek answers, and live out their Catholic identity in their day to day lives. Through small and large group activities, teens are given a safe and nurturing environment to build healthy and lasting relationships. They find a sense of community and belonging in our Church. Our Core Team Leaders have had the privilege of sharing in the sacraments with our teens through Life Teen Nights of Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation and Holy Mass.

Throughout this challenging year of the pandemic, we were still able to connect with our teens on a weekly basis through zoom and in-person. We were able to gather for social nights with a bonfire night sharing stories and s’mores, Christmas and Easter socials, a wood-working workshop and celebrating our seniors.

We are joyfully anticipating a more fun-filled and faith-filled year reconnecting with one another in person through weekly Life Nights, the Young Vincentian Leadership Program, volunteer opportunities for VBS, the regional youth event with Sean Forrest, overnight retreats, Catholic Youth Day at Busch Gardens, March for Life, the Diocesan Youth Conference and more! Our parish calendar will have the most up-to-date information.
