The Starfish Story

A young man was walking along the beach at dawn. He noticed an old man picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and flinging them into the sea. He asked the old man why he was doing this. The old man answered, the starfish will die if left stranded in the sun. But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish, countered the young man.  How can your effort make any difference?  The old man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves.  “I made a difference to that one,” he said.

Haiti Student Sponsorship Program

Sponsor a Haitian Child’s Education at:

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Schools at Saut D’Eau, Haiti.

Since 1997, Holy Spirit Catholic Church has been twinned with Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Saut D’Eau, Haiti.  We have been supporting our twin parish by paying the salaries of teachers and school directors at 3 schools.  We have placed a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel near the front entry to our church.  We include the parishioners in our Prayers of the Faithful and they include us in theirs.  We have posted a copy of our Covenant with our twin parish in the Commons and we periodically visit our twin parish and their Pastor visits us.

We have established the Holy Spirit, Haiti Twinning Ministry Student Sponsorship Program and looking to sponsor students in Haiti who cannot afford to attend school. For as little as $10 per month (or if you wish $100/year) you can provide education for a child, which is less than the cost of a cup of coffee every day.

Your donation will provide:

  • Tuition and Fees

  • School Supplies and Uniforms

  • Medications

  • Hot Lunches (for some this will be the only meal they will have each day)

If you would like to sign up for this life-changing opportunity or to become part of our Haiti Ministry, please contact Anna Barrett at (757) 340-6653 or email barrett_dmsr@yahoo.com.  We hope you will join us in making a difference in the lives of those in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere!
