Striving as Stewards (My weekly update)

A blessed Friday, everyone! I hope you're enjoying a great week and that you have the chance to enjoy the great outdoors on this beautiful day. Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, two bishops from the 3rd century who courageously witnessed to the Faith even to the shedding of their blood. May the prayers of these two saints, and all the martyrs of the Church, help us as we strive to live courageously for Jesus.

This weekend we'll hear the Lord speak about stewardship, inviting us to reflect on whom we truly serve. As with so many of our Gospel passages in recent months, this is a challenging invitation from the Lord! Take some time before you come to Mass this weekend and prayerfully read through the Scriptures so that your heart might be better prepared to receive what Jesus desires to share with you.

Now, on to a few updates...

LIFE TEEN FAMILY NIGHT: This Sunday, September 18, high school youth and their parents are invited to a Family Night from 6-8pm! Parents will have the opportunity to join their sons and daughters as we grow together as God's family. Please join us for a fun and formative evening!

RETREAT FOR YD CATECHISTS: Please pray for those who will be helping our young people in Youth Discipleship this year as we gather for a retreat tomorrow morning. We'll be focusing on the fundamentals of prayer and growing in our understanding of Ignatian imaginative prayer in anticipation of a grace-filled year with our youth.

FIRED UP! Thanks to our young adults who came out to our cookout and kickoff last Friday night -- it was a great time! We also enjoyed a fruitful meeting on Wednesday night as we prayed through the parable of the prodigal son. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for our Fired Up! young adult ministry in the year ahead.

AWAY NEXT WEEK: I will be away next week, so there will be no daily Mass, Confessions, or Adoration from Tuesday through Friday (Sept. 20-23). The weekend of September 24/25 we welcome Father Richard Kunzman who will be celebrating Mass and sharing about Cross Catholic Outreach and their important ministry to the poor around the world. I'll be back in Virginia Beach on Tuesday the 27th.

LET US PRAY... Please join me in praying the Memorare as we entrust ourselves to the loving care of our Blessed Mother:

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,

implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;

to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,

but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
