They also handle the dry cleaning and proper storage of priest vestments and altar cloths. Each cleaning team shares about an hour and a half of time once a month in this ministry. Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children ages 3-7 are encouraged to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program offered at the 10 am Mass. Volunteer catechists and assistants share the Sunday scripture readings at an appropriate age level accompanied by music, stories, and hands-on activities. Fill Out Form Email your form to: office@holyspiritvb.org We are the faith-inspired community of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, celebrating the life of Jesus Christ in our diverse and growing environment. We profess Him as the center of who we are and all we do. We are called to live a sacramental way of life in our active commitment to Christian fellowship, ministry, and outreach to those in need. We draw our strength from the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, as we seek to promote peace and justice within ourselves, our parish, the communities where we live and work, our country, and the world. On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 1975, the Most Reverend Walter F. Sullivan established Holy Spirit Parish, appointing Father William H. Carr as founding Pastor. The first liturgies were held at Holland Elementary School for 315 families. A Saturday liturgy was added when the pastor of the Plaza Methodist Church offered his building for our use. As Holy Spirit grew, Holland Elementary School became inadequate for the Sunday liturgies; Plaza Junior High (Plaza Middle School today) became our next home. With no permanent building to call home, religious education classes for 600 children, baptisms, and first communions where held in parishioners’ homes. From the beginning, it was the people who provided pastoral care for the sick, homebound, those in jail, and the needy within the parish and community. The people planned the liturgies, experienced Family Learning Teams, established the Sunshine Club for older adults, the Men’s Club to handle dinners, picnics and various repair projects, and the Women’s Guilds that hosted a variety of activities and provided food and support for families experiencing loss through death. There were parish picnics, dances, plays, bazaars and International Pot Luck suppers that fostered a sense of community among people from many diverse backgrounds. Everyone was eager to start the construction of the new church building. A group of parishioners envisioned a lasting commitment from people. In November 1976, a Stewardship Committee was formed. Stewards went to parishioners’ homes to pray and to spread the word about the need for stewardship. This concept was new for Catholics and Holy Spirit was the first parish in Virginia Beach to endorse this principle. The concept of Stewardship is still a vital part of our parish today. On August 6, 1978, ground was broken for a building and on August 22, 1979, Holy Spirit Parish Center and Worship Space was dedicated. The 1980’s was a time of rapid growth within the parish and the community. Established programs grew and new ones emerged: Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Adult Education, Bread Ministry, Peace and Justice, Social Ministry, Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, Right to Life, Soup Kitchen, and a Preschool. In addition, Holy Spirit sponsored families through the Refugee Resettlement Program. Parishioners assisted with the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. They helped the newcomers get acquainted with the area and with the customs in a place so far from their own land. In 1983, Father Fred Feusahrens succeeded Father Carr as our pastor. It was during the three years Father Fred was with us that our Mission Statement was developed. Parish History

- Our Mission | Holy Spirit Catholic Church | Virginia Beach, VA
Learn about the mission of Holy Spirit Catholic Church - to love God, love our neighbor, and make disciples. While this is the mission entrusted to the entire Church by Jesus Himself, read about how we are striving to live this mission out in our parish community. Our Mission Love God, Love our neighbor, Make disciples The mission of our parish is the same mission entrusted to the first disciples by Jesus Himself. But each parish community has its own gifts and personality, so while the fundamental mission remains the same throughout the universal Church, how that mission is lived and expressed looks a bit different from place to place. So how are we living the mission here at Holy Spirit? Love God We exist above all to love God. Our Church, and our parish, exist because of Jesus Christ! Part of our apostolic mission is to rediscover the joy of being in relationship with Jesus. That relationship is one of love, a love from Christ's heart that changes everything. Our life of prayer at the parish flows from this love as we strive to enter into it more deeply each and every day. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, our highest form of prayer, serves as the center and lifeblood of our community. We have a robust rhythm of prayer at Holy Spirit that flows from the Mass. Weekly Eucharistic Adoration, frequent Reconciliation, and a number of opportunities geared toward helping us grow in prayer. Love our neighbor. As we grow in love of God, that love overflows into every dimension of our lives. It is from the foundation of our loving relationship with God that we are called to love our neighbor. This is the second part of the "Great Commandment" of Jesus: to love our neighbor as ourselves. Holy Spirit is a place of welcome, where anyone can come to meet Jesus and find a community growing in love of God and in communion with one another. Maybe you are new to the area looking for a parish home, new to exploring a relationship with Jesus, or somewhere else in your journey -- Holy Spirit is a home for you! Our call to love our neighbor extends well beyond the walls of our church. We seek and serve Jesus in those in need, many of whom live in our neighborhood. Through a number of outreach opportunities organized by our conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, we accompany and provide assistance to our brothers and sisters who find themselves in need and on the margins. In this way we respond to the Lord's teaching in Matthew 25: "Whatsoever you do for one of the least of these, you do it for me." Make disciples. Just before his ascension into heaven, Jesus commanded his followers to "Go make disciples of all nations." Discipleship is a life-long journey flowing from an initial encounter with the person of Jesus. That encounter changes everything, compelling us to follow the Lord and live the life for which we've been made. To be a disciple is not an "add on," a part of our identity, but the very foundation of who we are and how we live. Here at Holy Spirit, the mission of making disciples is infused in every aspect of parish life. Our formation of young people is based in helping them to have an encounter with Jesus rooted in sacred Scripture and his ministry of healing. Sacramental preparation involves the whole family (the "domestic church") in order to help the seeds of faith and grace fall upon fertile soil. We have begun running Alpha, an opportunity for the entire parish to take the next step in discipleship, and we're discerning a discipleship pathway to help the Lord's work to unfold in our community and beyond.
- Hope for Life | Holy Spirit
< Back Hope for Life Volunteer Opportunity Do you feel called to serve Christ in a purposeful, courageous way that helps save lives? Hope 4 Life, the only local Catholic pregnancy center, needs your help! One of our primary roles is standing prayerfully outside local abortion clinics, speaking words of truth, hope and love to the moms and encouraging them to choose life for their unborn child. We need volunteers to serve as either sidewalk advocates or prayer partners (on site, in support of the advocates). Though challenging, there is nothing more rewarding than being a part of God’s work in saving the life of a child and the souls of the parents. Please prayerfully consid-er this opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless. For more information, call or text Katrina at (757) 334-6149 . Previous Next
